44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration
“Let us rise up with a greater readiness and determination.”
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville & Buncombe County, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) entity, is currently planning for our 44th annual MLK, Jr. Celebration events. The speaker for the Prayer Breakfast will be Jonathan McCoy, and the speaker for the Candlelight Ceremony is Fletcher Mayor Preston Blakely.
SPEAKERS
Prayer Breakfast | Jonathan McCoy, son of Rev. William and Joan McCoy of Durham, NC, grew up attending services in federal prisons where his father served as chaplain. These experiences shaped his belief in servant leadership and social justice. A graduate of Northern High School, he attended Mars Hill University on a football scholarship and became its first African American SGA President.
Candlelight Ceremony | Mayor Preston Blakely, born in Asheville and raised in Fletcher, has deep roots in Western North Carolina. He earned a B.A. in African American & African Diaspora Studies and Political Science from UNC Greensboro and an M.P.A. from Western Carolina University, where he was named Outstanding Public Affairs Student. He serves as Mayor of Fletcher, NC, and was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper to the Statewide Taskforce for Racial Equality in Criminal Justice.
