2024 Youth Scholarship Recipients
On the evening of June 7 2024, the Martin Luther King Association of Asheville and Buncombe County held its annual College Scholarship Ceremony at Black Wall Street in the River Arts District. Eight students received scholarships.
Applicants were required to show how they emulate the dream and teachings of Dr. King by (a) exhibiting concern for disadvantaged or oppressed people, (b) showing evidence that they have participated in community, civic or school affairs, (c) explaining how they have promoted community betterment, and (d) demonstrating academic success in high school.
The list below includes the names of the awardees, their high schools, and the college that they’ve chosen to attend.
- Lleyton Thomas-Johnson (Christ School) will attend Washington University in St. Louis.
- Imani Banks (Asheville High School) will attend North Carolina Central University.
- Judy Felipe de la Cruz (Buncombe County Early College) has been accepted into Queens University of Charlotte, UNC Asheville, and UNC Chapel Hill.
- Taylyn James (T.C. Roberson High School) will attend UNC Charlotte.
- Heavyn King (Carolina Day School) has been accepted into Elon University, UNC Charlotte, and the University of Michigan.
- Eden Mosely (Carolina Day School) has been accepted into Western Carolina University, North Carolina A&T, UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte, and the University of Memphis.
- Antonio Stinson (Asheville High School), has been accepted into Morehouse College, North Carolina A&T, and UNC Greensboro.
- Trinity Wheeler (North Buncombe High School) will attend UNC Charlotte.
