Eight Buncombe County students were announced as nominees for the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award at the Youth Celebration and Award Ceremony held June 16 in Ferguson Auditorium at A-B Technical Community College. These outstanding students have contributed to our community through their leadership skills and compassion, and they were honored to acknowledge their work and honor them as role models for other students. We congratulate them all!
Saim Alam, a 2016 graduate of Asheville High School, won the 2016 Youth Award, along with a $5,000 scholarship to his chosen college, Fordham University at Lincoln Center in New York City. He is the son of Irrun and Imran Alam.
Sebastian Elie-York, son of Caroline Elie, a graduate of School of Inquiry and Life Sciences (SILSA) at Asheville High, who was also awarded a scholarship of $2,000; he will attend UNC Chapel Hill this fall.
Enka High School graduate Brandon Dillingham, son of Chris and Damette Dillingham, will also enroll at Chapel Hill.
Owen High School graduate Lizzeth Flores-Gonzalez, daughter of Yolanda Gonzalez-Loza, will attend Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College
Raekwon Griffin, son of Vernette Griffin, graduated from Asheville High and will attend historic Morehouse College in Atlanta.
DeMarcus Harper, also of Owen and the grandson of Mary Harper and nephew of Jamal Harper, will attend Appalachian State University in Boone.
Kai Lendzion, son of Kriya Lendzion and a graduate of AHS, will head to Sarasota, FL to enroll at Ringling College of Art and Design.
Holt Mettee, daughter of Jeff and Anne Mettee, has committed to UNC Asheville in the fall of 2017. The Asheville School graduate will first spend a “gap year” with Global Citizen in India, working with Teach for India and living with a home-stay family for eight months.
Nallah Muhammad, an A. C. Reynolds graduate and the daughter of Jason and Tina Muhammad, will attend one of North Carolina’s most prestigious and renowned historically black colleges, NC A&T University in Greensboro.
